Description

stranger 19; a local café called "woyton", Düsseldorf (Germany), 12th of November, 2012

I'd been thinking about a word that seemingly does not exist ... a word that would describe the feeling of feeling home, feeling welcome, feeling comfortable in the place you are in or with the person you're talking to. I haven't yet found it - but if I knew the word, I'd use it in the descriptions of two moments. The first one was when Andrea and I entered Woyton ... we had just come in after wandering around the city, searching for a new notebook for me, when we decided to have another coffee. I was helping some guy with a fork that fell down as we got in, and as I looked up, I caught her eyes and she smiled at me. I smiled back. Immediately, I felt at ease. I felt good. It's like the feeling you get when you're on the train and next to you is this person, and you sit next to each other for four or five hours, and even though you do not talk a single time, you feel fine next to each other - as enjoyable companions, just by smiling or sharing friendly glances.
but I figured right away that I didn't want this to be just a smile. I walked up to her after a few moments and just explained it right away - she was with her mother, which looked so similar to her, and I felt excited because of all the coffee I'd been drinking that day. she said yes. she asked if she could smoke a cigarette. I said yes.
I always thought I wanted all of these strangers to face the camera ... to give me the expression that they want to show. Luna did smile on some photos, and she looked just as captivating as I had her in my memory. but I always thought of those moments where the person in front of the camera forgets about the situation, or isn't even aware of it, to be the most beautiful ones. she holds this kind of modest beauty. and I feel as though she understood the concept. as though she knew what I was about, and that she'd been thinking about it just the day before.
maybe one day I'll meet her again. I remember she said "see you soon" when I left. but I won't think about it. eventually, some strangers stay strangers until forever.

This really is a truly captivating project with wonderful outcomes so far.
I especially enjoy reading those little stories/situations you describe so vividly.
very beautiful, it must be an interesting way of meeting people for sure.
I'll be looking forward to the next stranger stories.
