Scenery is extremely important for every picture and the skyline in this photograph retracts from the overall impact.
Perhaps you could find another place to shoot this shot where the entire background gives the eye something to look at. Or you could always retake it later while its darker. Just try to always fill the photo. As the photo is, the leader bleeds into the background along with the article he's holding, another reason why this photo lacks the impact it could have.
I think the women and the pose the leader's making is a raw and striking one. Its a very exciting thing to watch, like I've stepped into a movie.
Last thing but certainly not least: Quality, Quality Quality!
Better quality, better pictures. I'd invest in an even better camera :]
Hope this helps and despite all of point-outs, the idea behind it is a strong one For the final
ah, I haven't received one of these in ages! oh, how happy this makes me right now, ah. first of all, thank you for writing something like this at all. apparently, I appreciate it greatly. concerning the things you mentioned, in general I figured that you are very true, and I'll keep it in mind next time shooting; however, for this photo the idea itself was that the model is mending with the sky, and so is the object, because it is not particularly about the face or body of the boy itself, but of the entire scenery surrounding him. therefore putting him in front of something darker would have not fit the concept I had in mind.
and about the quality, I know, it bothers me so much too. of course I didn't help too much about it because I did some purposely bad brushing at the bottom which also adds to the concept, yet quite some people just took it for me not knowing how to use a brushing-tool, which is sad. but I can't help it. throughout the time I've taken photos know, I learned so many "rules" and somehow I no longer really want to follow them, I just want to break them as they fit into the concept aha. but I might invest in a better camera soon. until then, I'll just stick to this and try to be fine about it.
